Sex Education
Some individuals with problematic sexual behaviors lack the necessary knowledge and social skills to develop healthy, sexual relationships. As a result, these individuals may develop maladaptive sexual behaviors. These individuals may benefit from therapies that address educational deficits or cognitive distortions. Modules in sex education which focus on male and female emotionality, relationship building, personal space, and appropriate dating skills are available at the Institute.
Sex Education for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
The Circles and The Life Horizons programs developed by Leslie Walker-Hirsch, MED and Marilyn P. Champagne, RN MSW are the most widely used sex education program for persons with developmental and learning disabilities. Both programs utilize video programs, scripts, and diagrams to teach individuals about sexuality. Group therapy which incorporates both the Circles and Life Horizons techniques and teaching concepts are available at the Institute.
